Oh I would pay to see this happen. I like Evangelion but it's 'take itself seriously' ratings are through the roof, and it could use some good lovin' from the bots.

Taleisin Jaffe was rather informative (and long-winded) in the EVA commentary streams, but I would have also preferred MST3K's crew to do it. Very funny considering the extremely high WTF?! factor in End of EVA, of which Shinji's monkey-spanking is but a small part. I loved watching MST3K on Sci-Fi back in the day, so thanks for the tribute.

Is Jaffe that guy who kept on about how Eva correlated to all this religious symbolism and shit? If so, no, he's not informative. He has no idea what he's talking about.

I believe he was, and though all that is quite a stretch (if not utter bull patties), who am I to discourage the English or philosophy or religious studies majors of this world?

I'd absolutely discourage his studies as complete illogical bullshit. He didn't try understanding Eva, he tried correlating his ridiculous religious ideology. Hideaki Anno and people at Gainax have explicitly stated that the religious symbolism in Eva is of no meaning at all, other than "being cool".

That's how it's been for a lot of early anime with all those Stars of David. Besides, the script for EVA, I'm sure, was banged out under hellacious deadline pressures, which left little or no time for symbolism checks.

Not to mention the low budget, I love Eva but really, it's a psychological character study. Basically meaning "don't cut people off from yourself, and face your problems because life sucks sometimes". Not about the *kaballah* and etc.

The Kabbalah is a dense work of symbolism and numerology, and has long been the province of rabbis and scholars who have the time and the desire to dissect it. It is not something to be handled lightly by celebrities and anime writers and enthusiasts like Jaffe. Even Thomas Pynchon's extremely dense magnum opus Gravity's Rainbow (1973) knows when to ease up off of the Kabbalah symbolism.
